Landscape Photography

I captured landscapes as my first serious foray into photography. It seemed like a no brainer - they didn't move (so wrong! The weather makes them incredibly dynamic), they are just there, you take a picture and it will be ok (even more wrong). You just stick a wide angle lens on (often, not always) and stop down the aperture for lots of depth of field (well, yeah, mostly). See, easy! I then proceeded to take reams of really bad landscape photos. I still do.

Hopefully I have improved, but as you will see from these photos - still working on it...

The Master - Ansel Adams

In my opinion, to see how good landscapes can be visit https://www.anseladams.com/ - if I could ever produce one photo that was as good as Ansel Adams's least impactful (if such a thing exists) I would be a happy photographer. His control of light and dark and depth of field is breath taking.

Yes, he had Yosemite as his canvas, but the photographer owns the image taken and he maximised the beauty of those landscapes. As Vermeer could elevate portraiture to the entrapment of humanity in a single frame, so Adams distilled the scale of forests, mountains and sky into the most memorable photos within that genre of photography. However long I practice I won't come close, but there is no shame in that.
